The new timeline in Timely streamlines your interaction with tracked activities and offer a more intuitive, customizable experience. This article will provide a brief overview of what's new and how you can use it.

Note: The new timeline is currently in a limited beta. Please contact us if you are interested in getting access.

Grouping and ungrouping memories

The most frequent request we get related to the timeline is the ability to see memories at a more granular level. For example to be able to see time spent per e-mail as separate blocks in the timeline instead of a big "Gmail" block:

Good news: You can now easily group and ungroup memories by changing the grouping option per memory type.

For Gmail, we can easily change the grouping settings from "Grouped" to "Split up":

This will result in each e-mail title appearing as separate memories:

Tip: If you want to split up everything, you can use the toggle in the top of the timeline:

Note: If you experience that memories 'disappear' when you choose to split them up, check your memory hiding settings.

Logging memories is a thing of the past

We're shifting from logging individual memories to selecting entire time spans they belong to, for two reasons:

First, it eliminates the idea that you must log all your memories to achieve 'inbox zero', a common misconception that causes unnecessary work.

Second, while memories have always been private, the new approach of separating time entry from memory makes this clearer.

In the old timeline, clicking a memory linked it to the time entry:

In the new timeline, clicking memories doesn't link them to the time entry, but adds only the memory's timespan to it:

You can expand or contract by dragging the edges of the bar as shown above.

See memories shorter than 2 minutes

The classic timeline hides memories shorter than 2 minutes by default.

Many of you have told us that you need to be able to see short memories in order to log your time accurately. We understand you need to see brief memories to log time accurately, so the new timeline lets you control what's hidden in your timeline:

You can find this setting by clicking the cogwheel in the top right corner of the timeline.

Clean up your timeline by making memories compact

All memories are created equal, but some memories are more equal than others.

If I don't need calendar meetings, Slack activity, and Zoom calls to decide how to log time, I can now make them compact, saving horizontal space.

You can set memories to display compact in their configuration.

Freeze columns to keep them visible when scrolling

This feature enables you to pin essential columns, ensuring key information remains visible as you navigate through your Timeline. Very similar to using the "Freeze Columns" feature in Excel. Here you can see the Google Calendar column frozen:

You can freeze columns from the memory configuration menu.

How to configure memories

You can configure memories of the same type separately in the new timeline. Memories from the same application or website are considered one type.

Hover a memory on the timeline and click the three dots to configure it:

Advanced Configuration

Click the cogwheel in the top right corner of the timeline to access advanced configuration options for display control.

Let's go through what each setting does:

Group memories together if the break is less than [...] minutes

This will merge memories of the same type together if the gap between them is less than what you set the slider to.

These memories have gaps of between 5 and 10 minutes between them:

Change the setting to group memories with less than a 10-minute gap, and this is what you get:

Hide memories shorter than [...] minutes

Use this to control whether short memories should be hidden or not on your timeline.

Show ignored memories

Use this to show memories you've previously ignored.

Compact memories

Use this to show a compact version of this memory type and make your timeline cleaner.
